Conspiracy beliefs and the individual, relational, and collective selves

Recent empirical and theoretical developments suggest that endorsement of conspiracy theories can arise from the frustration social motives. Taking this further, current review integrates theorising on processes relating to three selves—the individual, relational, collective self outlines their associations with beliefs. In doing so, we argue motives pertaining individual (e.g., narcissism, need for uniqueness) are linked belief in deflect blame personal shortcomings protect self-image. Motives responding threats relational exclusion) increase regain a sense support through exchanging shared concerns. Finally, perceived ingroup victimhood) foster beliefs defend group image by blaming outgroups misfortunes placing one's morally superior victim role.
